Law Enforcement Protocols

Nexo evaluates requests for user information under applicable law. This page describes how authorized agencies can contact us; it does not grant access to any account or data.

Last updated: October 2026

1. Request channel

Send requests from an official agency email address to nexo.service@outlook.com with the subject “Law enforcement request.” Include the agency name, officer's name and title, official contact information, jurisdiction, case number, and a way for us to verify the request independently. Receipt of an email is not acceptance of service of legal process.

2. Required information and legal authority

Identify the relevant account as precisely as possible, state the records requested and applicable date range, explain the legal basis, and attach valid legal process where required. Requests should be specific and proportionate; general requests for all campus users are not sufficient.

We review the requester's authority, jurisdiction, and the validity and scope of the legal process. We may seek clarification, narrow a request, or decline a request that is invalid, overbroad, or not legally required. Disclosure is limited to information available to us and permitted or required by law.

3. Preservation requests

Clearly label requests to preserve existing records, identify the account and date range, provide the legal basis and requested preservation period, and include follow-up contact details. Preservation does not itself authorize disclosure, recover deleted information, or guarantee that requested records exist. Any preservation is subject to applicable law and technical availability.

4. Emergency requests

For a situation involving imminent risk of death or serious physical injury, use the subject “Emergency disclosure request” and explain the emergency, the people at risk, why the information is necessary, why ordinary legal process cannot be obtained in time, and a reachable agency contact.

Nexo assesses emergency disclosures under applicable law. Our email inbox is not an emergency dispatch service, is not guaranteed to be monitored continuously, and cannot guarantee a response time. Contact local emergency services first.

5. User notice and confidentiality

Where lawful and appropriate, we may notify an affected user. Notice may be delayed or withheld where prohibited by law, valid legal process, or a substantiated safety risk. An agency seeking confidentiality should provide the legal basis and any relevant order.

Anonymous posting hides an author's identity from other students, not necessarily from Nexo or a legally authorized investigation. Do not assume any records are retained for a fixed period or that Nexo can retrieve information that has been deleted.

6. Exploitation and serious safety concerns

Child sexual exploitation, human or sex trafficking, and credible threats are prohibited. Where legally required, Nexo reports suspected child sexual exploitation to the appropriate reporting authority, including NCMEC, and cooperates with lawful investigations. Do not email illegal imagery; identify its location and relevant account instead.
